Information is paramount for the overall health of any system which is highlighted through its direct linkage to “Capability and Teaching” through “National policy” and “Adequate policy enforcement”. Information acts as an important reinforcing loop which highlights the vital role of properly gathered and communicated information.
Information needs within this system ranges from data collection, testing and monitoring of water quality to the provision or knowledge translation activities to the general public. Information is shown to directly support “Capability and teaching” through “National policy”; “Adequate policy enforcement” as well as the development and nurturing of “Culture”.
Stakeholders conveyed that information leads to a heighted understanding of how and when to use our Blue Spaces, as well as supporting policy enforcement. Information needs also differ depending on how we use our Blue Spaces i.e. whether you are a swimmer, surfer who get in the water or a fisherperson. The challenge remains with making information provision reliable, transparent, timeline and accessible to all.
Guidelines for recreational waters do exist and have a focus on water quality management for public health and the broader ecosystems. There are protocols in place, particularly during the bathing seasons to monitor and report recreational water quality issues. However, this information should be optimized for the public ensuring that they know how and where to access it as well what this information means for them.
For the information related to water quality in particular that is already available, recommendations should focus on promoting the existing reporting tools in a public facing way.
Testing and monitoring may also be restricted to within the bathing season which does not serve the needs of all year round water users. In addition, insufficient testing and notification cause uncertainty about various Blue Space issues, which exacerbates fears (e.g. “fear of getting sick”), and eventually results in adversely affecting “Accessibility & use.” This Loop means that if numerous stakeholders cannot avail of proper information, then adequate policy, enforcement and management and action are impeded.
